Once a year in spring, after good winter rains, the Namaqualand and adjacent areas change from dusty plains and valleys to an unimaginable kaleidoscope of colour. Visitors from all over the world flock to the Namaqualand to share in this experience. This spectacle lasts only for about a month before all the colour disappear before the hot sun and the warm winds which come with early summer. Due to unpredictable rainfall the quality of the flowers can’t be guaranteed and therefore the tour itinerary covers more than just flowers to compromise during seasons with less flowers.
DAY 01 Upington – Klein Pella
Depart to Augrabies Falls National Park. En route we visit Tierberg Nature Reserve in Keimoes, from where one has a beautiful view of the lush green Orange River Valley, stop at Kakamas for wine tasting at the second largest cooperative wine cellar in the world, the Orange River Wine Cellar.
Visit the Augrabies Falls, which is the sixth largest waterfall in the world when South Africa’s largest river, the Orange is in flood. The word Augrabies derives from the Khoi meaning ‘place of great noise. Scenic – and game drive in this moon landscape-like land to awesome viewpoints such as Ararat, Oranjekom on the Orange River Gorge and the “Swartrante” (Black hills) from where one has a great view of this arid rocky desert landscape. Although Augrabies is essentially a scenic park, game such as giraffe, springbok, gemsbok, eland, kudu red hartebeest, Hartman’s zebra and klipspringer survive in this unique riverine ecosystem. Fish eagles and black eagles are common residents.
We proceed on the gravel road through the Bushmanland via Pofadder to Klein Pella. Klein Pella is an oasis in the desert, being a grape export farm and having the largest date plantations in the southern hemisphere.

Accommodation can vary from the itinerary depending on availability.
Extra days can be added to the 4 Day Namaqualand Flower tour. The flowers in Namaqualand and the Western Cape are seasonal and can vary in quality from season to season in various areas. Days added will be based on personal interests of the clients and expectations of the quality of the flowers. Adequate winter rainfall by the end of June is a good indication of a good flower season during late August and early September.
Good flower areas that can be added to the 4-day tour are the Diamond Coast, Garies, the Knersvlakte & Van Rhynsdorp, West Coast National Park, Darling, Clanwilliam and Niewoudtville. Please contact us for tailor made flower tours. The rates for extra days are an indication of costs and can vary, depending on accommodations used and distances travelled.
